Standing out from the first generation of Portuguese modernist painters, Amadeo’s exceptional quality of work and splendid dialog with the historical vanguards of the early 20th century, allowed him to establish a notable position in the art world of his time. His painting has combined movements like cubism, futurism and expressionism, comparable to the top production of his time’s international art. Amadeo died at a young age, which dictated the abrupt ending of a pictorial work in a speeding growth and a promising international career, but still in the phase of affirmation. The artist would be long forgotten within, and especially outside of Portugal. Only recently Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso began his path to a historiographic recognition.
