AMADEO DE SOUZA-CARDOSO (Manhufe, 1887)

Standing out from the first generation of Portuguese modernist painters, Amadeo’s exceptional quality of work and splendid dialog with the historical vanguards of the early 20th century, allowed him to establish a notable position in the art world of his time. His painting has combined movements like cubism, futurism and expressionism, comparable to the top production of his time’s international art. Amadeo died at a young age, which dictated the abrupt ending of a pictorial work in a speeding growth and a promising international career, but still in the phase of affirmation. The artist would be long forgotten within, and especially outside of Portugal. Only recently Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso began his path to a historiographic recognition.

JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES (Guimarães, 1939)

Since 1995 the artist divides his life between Lisbon and Paris. A stay in Angola in the decade of 60 of last century, would become a determinant in the definition of their artistic vocabulary, as well as the contact with experts in African ethnology. Born as an artistic project driven by an attempt to reverse osmosis between two forms of plastic expression, the European Community and the Republic. But if the first decade of artistic production is based in Africa, in more than forty years of work, are complete series dedicated to Chinese and Japanese cultures, the art of Rubens, the literature of Camões or the particular design of death in Mexico. In recent years, it appears that your route reflects a vocation of forms and figures tend to be cosmopolitan. Having conducted numerous exhibitions in various countries and, in addition to individual exhibitions held in the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon, 1978), the Palais des Beaux-Arts (Brussels, 1984), the Museum of Modern Art (Mexico City, 1987) and in the Serralves Foundation (Porto, 1992) in the last decade, has been dedicated to him or retrospetivas anthological exhibition in Portugal, in Germany, in Tokyo, in Switzerland, in Brazil, in Spain, in Luanda, in Italy, in Brussels and in China. In 2012, is elected President of the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes. His work is represented in the most important institutional collections in Portugal and around the world (with special focus on Japan and Germany), proposes crosses with the art of non-western civilizations – India, China and the Mesoamerican – a relentless pursuit of non verbal relations, that is not strange to the labor of the collector that has been dedicating several decades ago.
